Now a study from Harvard Medical School shows that weightlifting can cut the risk of diabetes in women - particularly if incorporated into a workout regimen including aerobic exercise - by up to a third. (Aerobic exercise has already been established as an effective strategy to prevent diabetes.) It is believed that maintaining a greater muscle mass - which is metabolically more active than adipose, or fat, tissue - contributes to the decreased risk.
