Bisphenol A (also known as BPA) is a ubiquitous plastic additive, seen in everything from plastic water bottles to receipt paper. Unfortunately, it is known to have estrogen-like effects on the body, and may contribute to obesity, diabetes, and hormone sensitive cancers (for example, breast and ovarian cancer). Although BPA is not banned in the US currently, many manufacturers have chosen to remove BPA from their products, partially from customer demand. The trouble is, many of these manufacturers have replaced BPA in their products with other compounds that may be just as dangerous as the original products, if not more so.
It is prudent, in my mind, to at least consider potential sources of BPA and avoid them as much as possible. Obesity, diabetes, and cancer all have many causes, and eliminating as many as possible is in your best interest. Unfortunately, we may now have to look at potential sources of BPA as suspect now, too.
